Swim Wetsuit Sizing and Triathlon Temperature Rules

How a swim wetsuit should fit, how to use a size chart, why swim wetsuits differ from surf suits, and USA Triathlon's water temperature rules for wetsuits.

Quick answer

A swim wetsuit should feel tight on land, with no water pockets at the lower back, and free enough at the shoulders to reach overhead. Size by the brand's height and weight chart rather than clothing size. Swim wetsuits use thinner, more flexible shoulders than surf wetsuits. Under USA Triathlon rules, age-group athletes may wear a wetsuit in water up to 78°F; between 78.1 and 83.9°F they may wear one but are not eligible for awards; at 84°F and above wetsuits are not allowed.

A wetsuit adds warmth and buoyancy for open-water swimming. Fit decides whether it helps or holds you back.

Fit checklist

  • No water-holding folds at the lower back, chest or armpits.
  • Crotch of the suit sits close to your body.
  • Arms reach overhead without pulling the suit down.
  • The neck seals without choking; you can breathe deeply.
  • Ankles and wrists end at the ankle and wrist bones.

Sizing

Use the brand’s chart by height and weight, and check chest and waist if listed. If you fall between sizes, taller swimmers usually size by height and stockier swimmers by chest.

Safety

Swim with others, wear a bright cap and use a tow float so boats and lifeguards can see you. For pool and race kit, see goggles and tech suits.

Common questions

Can I use a surf wetsuit for triathlon?

You can, but a surf suit has stiffer shoulders and less buoyancy in the legs, so swimming in it is harder.

How tight should a swim wetsuit be?

Snug enough that there are no folds or water pockets, especially at the lower back and armpits, while you can still raise your arms overhead.

What is the wetsuit temperature cutoff in triathlon?

For USA Triathlon age-group racing, wetsuits are legal up to 78°F, allowed without award eligibility up to 83.9°F and banned at 84°F and above.

How should I put a wetsuit on?

Use your fingertips, not nails, work the suit up a little at a time and pull extra material up toward the shoulders so they are not restricted.
