How to Choose Swim Goggles: Fit, Gaskets and Lens Tints

Pick swim goggles that seal and stay clear: the suction fit test, silicone, foam and gasketless designs, lens tints for indoor and outdoor, and anti-fog care.

Quick answer

Goggles that fit will seal for a second or two when you press them to your eyes without the strap. Silicone gaskets are the comfortable all-rounder, low-profile and gasketless racing goggles trade comfort for a lower profile, and masks suit wide faces and open water. Choose clear or light lenses for indoor pools, smoke or mirrored lenses for sun, and never rub the inside of the lens, where the anti-fog coating sits.

The best goggles are the ones you forget you are wearing. Fit matters far more than brand.

The fit test

  1. Hold the goggles to your eyes without the strap.
  2. Press gently so the gaskets sit in your eye sockets.
  3. They should hold by suction for a second or two.

If they fall away immediately, the shape does not suit your face. Try a different gasket or a narrower or wider frame.

Gasket types

Type Feel Best for
Silicone gasket Soft, forgiving Daily training, most swimmers
Foam gasket Very soft, wears faster Short sessions
Gasketless (Swedish style) Hard plastic, low profile Racers who assemble their own fit
Mask Large frame, wide view Wide faces, open water, comfort

Adjustable nose bridges matter: too wide and the lenses angle out, too narrow and they press on the nose.

Lens tints

Tint Use
Clear Indoor pools, early morning
Light blue or amber Indoor, adds contrast
Smoke or gray Bright outdoor light
Mirrored Bright sun, open water
Polarized Glare off the water outdoors

Anti-fog and care

  • Never wipe the inside of the lens.
  • Rinse in cold fresh water after each swim.
  • Let them dry out of direct sun.
  • Store them in a case so the lenses do not scratch.

Straps

Split straps spread pressure across the back of the head and stay put. Single straps are lower profile for racing. Wear the strap high on the crown, over or under the cap as you prefer.

Pair goggles with the right cap and suit. For open water, see wetsuit sizing.

Common questions

How do I know if swim goggles fit?

Press them gently into your eye sockets without the strap. If they stay on by suction for a second or two, the seal fits your face.

Why do my goggles keep fogging?

Fog forms when warm skin meets a cool lens. Rubbing the inside wears off the anti-fog coating; rinse with cold water and use an anti-fog spray once the coating is gone.

What lens color is best for indoor pools?

Clear or light tints. Mirrored and dark smoke lenses are for bright outdoor light.

Are prescription goggles worth it?

Yes, if you rely on glasses to see the clock and lane lines. Many brands sell stepped diopter lenses you can mix for each eye.
